Senior Nutrition client celebrates 98 years of life

Happy 98th Birthday, Orville!

We would like to wish our wonderful Senior Nutrition client, Orville, a very happy 98th birthday! Program Assistant, Trisha Dahl, and a volunteer visited him and his caregivers to help celebrate his special day. Trisha shared these remarks from her visit:

“During our visit, I enjoyed hearing about Orville’s incredible journey. Born and raised in Usk, Orville moved to Newport with his family at the age of 10. Orville served in the Army during the Korean War and later went on to build a long career with the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring at the age of 55. He also spent many years caring for his mother and brother before they passed away.

In his spare time, Orville enjoyed collecting stamps, keeping track of baseball statistics, reading, and following his favorite baseball team, the Seattle Mariners.

When asked about his advice for living a long life, Orville simply said, “Just keep on going.”

Orville continues to live independently in his home in Newport and takes pride in doing things for himself. He loves making his bed and doing his own dishes and is fortunate to have wonderful caregivers who support him.

Many years ago, Orville reached out to Rural Resources to begin receiving Meals on Wheels. He receives three hot suppers delivered to his home each week, along with frozen meals that he can keep in his freezer and heat at his convenience. This service has remained an important part of his life, helping support his independence and allowing him to continue living in his own home.

Orville was very happy to have us visit and shared that he sometimes gets lonely. Providing social connections through volunteer deliveries and visits is an essential part of Meals on Wheels. We are grateful for the opportunity to spend time with him, listen to his stories, and celebrate this incredible milestone.”

Happy 98th birthday, Orville!  Thank you for allowing us to be part of your special day and for sharing your life stories with us. We wish you a birthday filled with joy, love, and many more happy memories!
