Rural Resources is proud to announce the launch of WA Cares, a new public long-term care insurance program partnering with our Senior and Independent Living Services department. In collaboration with Aging and Long-Term Care of Eastern Washington (ALTCEW), WA Cares brings together trusted partners and practical resources to make long-term care more accessible, manageable, and person-centered for our rural communities.

WA Cares benefits became available in July 2026, but this program has existed for a few years already. Washingtonians working 500 or more hours per year have been earning access to long-term care benefits by contributing 0.58% of each paycheck since July 2023. Washingtonians can earn up to $36,500 in lifetime long-term care coverage (total grows over time with inflation). The typical Washington worker earning just over $59,000 per year contributes about $29 per month.

Unlike Medicaid LTC coverage, which requires participants to spend down their life savings to $2,000 to qualify, WA Cares qualification is based on an individual’s payroll contributions and their care needs. These care needs include long-term assistance (90 days or longer) with 3 or more activities of daily living, such as:

• Bathing
• Bed mobility
• Transferring (getting in or out of a chair)
• Toileting
• Mobility (walking or moving around)
• Eating
• Managing medications

You can use your benefits to receive any covered services from a registered WA Cares provider, including care in your home or a facility, home modifications, home-delivered meals, adaptive equipment and technology, and more.
